‘Ma! ‘Ah, daughter!
On the evening of July 4, a unrelated mother and daughter who had not seen each other for 23 years hugged each other tightly in the Bailu Bay community of Wufeng Tujia Autonomous County.
“After all these years of not being able to find my mother, I finally met her!”
Qin Huifen, who drove more than 600 kilometers from Guizhou to Wufeng that day, knelt down in front of Wang Lanying with tears in her eyes.
“I know you, my little girl is back, and you have the same eyes as my Chunmei’s daughter!” Wang Lanying, 82, held Qin Huifen’s hand for a long time and refused to let go.
Wufeng teacher became “the first person in Shenzhen to donate corneas free of charge”
The mother and daughter met 23 years ago when they had a corneal transplant in Shenzhen.
In 1989, Xiang Chunmei, the younger daughter of Wang Lanying, was admitted to Huazhong University of Science and Technology (now Huazhong University of Science and Technology) and was recommended for admission to graduate school. Born in Wufeng, Xiang taught at Hunan University and Shenzhen University after graduation. In 1999, Xiang Chunmei, who was not yet 29 years old, was diagnosed with advanced rectal cancer. When she was told that there was no hope of treatment, she decided to donate her corneas free of charge.
Her mother Wang Lanying was looking after Xiang Chunmei in Shenzhen at the time. Xiang told her mother and sister Tian Minge, “I am leaving this world at such a young age. I am a member of the Communist Party and I want to do something more or less for society.” Wang Lanying consulted with her family and complied with Xiang Chunmei’s wishes. Xiang’s corneas were transplanted to Qin Huifen and two other patients to help them see again.
In the moment of Wang Lanying and Qin Huifen mother and daughter recognize, sister Tian Ming E said to the mother: “You see Huifen sister, no sister to donate her cornea, she will not be so smoothly married and gave birth, Huifen sister son is now 20 years old! You should be glad that your sister has done such a good deed.”
Xiang Chunmei set the first precedent of corneal donation in Shenzhen and became the source of human organ donation history in Shenzhen. Xiang Chunmei’s brave decision 23 years ago made her “the first person in Shenzhen to donate corneas free of charge”.
The “bright continuation” is completed in Yi
The day before Qin and Wang met, Yao Xiaoming, the chief expert of Shenzhen Huaxia Eye Hospital who performed Xiang’s corneal removal and transplant surgery, flew to Yichang from Shenzhen.
Early this year, Yao’s team decided to perform cataract surgery on Wang Lanying after learning she was suffering from cataracts. An operation to restore the sight of Xiang Chunmei’s mother, “the first person to donate cornea free of charge in Shenzhen”, was sponsored by Shenzhen Lions Club and Shenzhen Care Action Public Welfare Foundation. Yichang Huaxia Eye Hospital donated all the cost of the operation, and Shenzhen people from all walks of life presented condolence money and goods.
On July 3, Yao Xiaoming performed phacoemulsification and intraocular lens implantation for Wang Lanying in both eyes at Huasha Eye Hospital in Yichang. After surgery, Wang’s eyesight improved from 0.08 to 0.4.
On the afternoon of July 4, she was discharged from the hospital. Yao Xiaoming and others accompanied her home. Wang Lanying’s eyesight is gradually recovering.
She promoted the organ transplant process in Shenzhen
The Shenzhen Lions Club and Shenzhen Care Action Public Welfare Foundation presented Wang Lanying with a special gift — a photo of Xiang Chunmei’s memorial statue and the leaves of the “Tree of Light”.
As the first person in Shenzhen to donate corneas free of charge, Xiang’s act has influenced many people. Since then, the number of people who have pledged to donate corneas to Shenzhen Eye Hospital has been increasing. “I have always called Xiang Chunmei’s case a milestone in the history of organ and corneal donation in Shenzhen and even the whole country,” Yao said. “After Xiang Chunmei, it greatly accelerated the historical process of corneal donation.”
The first eye bank was established in Shenzhen in 2000. Since then, the Shenzhen Eye Bank has completed nearly 1,000 corneal donations, contributing to the first corneal donation in Hunan, Hubei, Jilin, Hainan and other provinces, and nearly 2,000 patients with corneal disease have received corneal transplantation in Shenzhen Eye Hospital and other transplant units. In October 2003, the Regulations of Shenzhen Special Economic Zone on Human Organ Donation and Transplantation, the first national regulation on organ transplantation, was issued. In 2007, The State Council promulgated the Regulations on Human Organ Donation and Transplantation.
Every Tomb-sweeping Day, Xiang’s classmates and Shenzhen residents voluntarily go to pay their respects to Xiang.
Under the Futa Temple, among the green trees, Xiang Chunmei statue attracts attention, her beautiful eyes gazing deeply at Shenzhen.
“There are still many good people in the world,” Wang Lanying said. “After 23 years, there are still so many people who remember us, which makes us more regretful!”
